150 Symes – Historic Restoration & Redevelopment
Heritage Toronto – 2019 William Greer Built Heritage Award
The award honours outstanding achievements in conservation, craftsmanship, and adaptive reuse, and projects of any scale.
This project transformed two long-derelict former City of Toronto waste management buildings through full conversion, restoration, and reconstruction. Work included complete interior demolition and abatement, sandblasting, and extensive masonry and concrete restoration. Structural upgrades involved floor infills, new staircases, and new elevator shafts.
The buildings received a fully renewed envelope—roof, windows, and associated systems—along with new mechanical, electrical, lighting, and sprinkler systems. Interior work included common area improvements and fit-outs for an event space and brewery. Site works completed the redevelopment, with new servicing, water retention tanks, paving, and landscaping.
